The labor numbers – specifically – the percent of those employed, under-employed or unemployed are of great interest to investors, politicians, business owners and the general public.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), which is part of the Department of Labor, publishes six different measures of unemployment. The measure that seems to get the most attention is U-3, which measure the total unemployed as a percent of the civilian labor force.
The six measures can be referenced on this handy chart provided by BLS.
In our estimation, it is the U-6 number that should receive the focus, not the U-3 number.
